Master Your Impulse Control and Reclaim Your Peace of Mind

Do you feel like your emotions are in the driver’s seat?

We all act without thinking occasionally. However, when impulsive behaviors become a pattern, they can damage your relationships, career, and self-esteem. Often, these struggles are not just "bad habits"—they are symptoms deeply connected to ADHD, anxiety, or high stress.

At Well Mind California, I specialize in helping individuals across the state build the skills necessary to pause, reflect, and choose a healthier path.

What is Impulse Control

Impulse control is a crucial component of executive functioning and mental health, defined as the cognitive and emotional ability to consciously resist sudden urges, harmful behaviors, or intense emotional reactions in order to make intentional decisions that support long-term well-being. Rather than acting on immediate instincts, individuals with healthy impulse control utilize behavioral inhibition, emotional regulation, and delayed gratification to pause and evaluate the potential consequences of their actions. Mastering this skill is essential for managing stress, overcoming disruptive behaviors, and navigating complex social interactions, whereas ongoing challenges in this area frequently intersect with mental health conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and specific impulse control disorders.

Recognizing the Signs of Impulse Control Issues

People often search for answers when they feel their behavior is becoming unmanageable. You might benefit from professional support if you recognize these signs:

The "Now" Trap: Difficulty waiting or feeling intense agitation when things don't happen instantly (often seen in ADHD).
Emotional Reactivity: Anger or frustration that feels disproportionate to the situation.
Regretful Actions: saying or doing things you wish you could take back immediately.
Dopamine Seeking: Engaging in spending, eating, or scrolling to self-soothe without thinking of the consequences.

How We Treat Impulsivity: The "Urge Surfing" Approach

Impulse control is not about "fighting" your feelings; it is about learning to ride them out. One of the core techniques I teach is Urge Surfing.

Imagine an urge (to yell, to spend, to quit) as a wave. It rises, peaks in intensity, and eventually crashes and fades.

The Mistake: Most people try to stop the wave (suppression) or drown in it (acting out).
The Solution: I teach you to "surf" the top of the wave—observing the physical sensations of the urge without acting on them until the feeling subsides.

My Therapeutic Approach

With over 11 years of experience as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), I combine Urge Surfing with other evidence-based tools:

Identifying Triggers: We pinpoint the specific stressors or anxiety spikes that launch the urge.
Cognitive Reframing: Learn to catch the "automatic thoughts" that justify impulsive actions.
ADHD Support: If your impulsivity is linked to ADHD, we work on executive function skills to help you plan ahead.
